Winter Work Across the Gardens

Winter Notes in the Garden

Late Winter’s steady progress

Winter brings a different pace to the gardens. Growth has paused, but the work continues quietly in the background, focusing on care, safety, and preparation for what’s to come.

In the Garden

We’ve removed the remaining seasonal decorations from the plots and placed them in the car park for collection. A thorough check around the gardens followed, with flowers removed from plots where they had passed their best. Clearing back at this stage helps keep beds healthy and ready for the next cycle of growth.

A large section of Lonicera by the middle pond has also been cleared. The plants were unhealthy and no longer contributing to the area. This space will be replanted with more interesting varieties grown from seed, giving us better structure and interest as the seasons change.

What I’m Noticing

Shrubs in the Peace and Tranquillity border have responded well to careful pruning and cutting back. It’s a reminder that winter work, though less visible, shapes the garden more than perhaps is noticeable.

On the Hill of Roses, we’re currently removing the outer ring of roses. This is ongoing work, but an important step in improving the long-term health and layout of the area.

Final Thought

Winter gardening is about decisions rather than display. Removing tired planting, cutting back, and clearing space can look stark, but it’s what allows better things to follow.

Looking Ahead

As colder weather continues, safety remains a priority. The car park and paths have been salted three times so far to keep them safe and ice-free for visitors. Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue structural work while keeping an eye on weather and ground conditions.

Best Wishes,

Martin
